Orthopaedic and Manual Medicine (O.M.M) is defined as the medical approach of all benign disorders and pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, particularly of the spinal column, and it’s treatment using manual and other non-invasive techniques.
This definition excludes all surgical procedures involving the musculoskeletal system, which fall under the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology specialty field, as well as all inflammatory diseases, which are studied by the Rheumatologists.
The educational background in Orthopaedic and Manual Medicine varies greatly from country to country. In English speaking countries the influence of the Cyriax School is very present, and in France and other Latin countries the concepts and methodology of R. Maigne have predominated. Nowadays, the International Federation of Manual Medicine (I.F.M.M. / F.I.M.M.) groups together the professional medical societies of Manual Medicine of over 20 countries, each with their respective tendencies, and it’s doing an important effort promoting investigation and the evolution of this medical specialty.
The physician specialized in Orthopaedic and Manual Medicine, based on a precise clinical diagnosis, which would indicate the correct therapeutic approach, possesses a wide variety of specific manual techniques appropriate for many mechanical dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system, which should be viewed as part of a global medical treatment. This treatment may include pharmaceutical treatment, be it with systemic or local applied with joint injections, and postural and “functional re-education” of the musculoskeletal system.
